Years 1 & 2 - Sycamore Class

Welcome to Sycamore Class, Year 1/2!

Sycamore Class is a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class. Our teacher is Mrs Wheeler. Our teaching assistant is the wonderful Miss Beth.

☀️ Summer Term – Class Update

📚 Learning

This half-term, Year 1/2 will continue to develop their confidence, independence and enthusiasm for learning through a range of exciting and engaging activities across the curriculum.

English

In English, we will be exploring two exciting texts: Goldilocks and One Bear by Leigh Hodgkinson.

Using Goldilocks and One Bear, the children will:

  • Write their own short narratives.
  • Recount their visit to Marwell Zoo.
  • Write persuasive letters.
  • Develop their sentence writing, punctuation and storytelling skills.

Throughout the term, children will continue to develop their reading, handwriting, spelling and grammar skills.

Mathematics

This term, we will be focusing on:

  • Fractions
  • Time
  • Mass, Capacity and Temperature
  • Geometry: Position and Direction

The children will continue to build their confidence in number and apply their mathematical understanding through practical activities, reasoning and problem-solving challenges.

Enrichment Opportunities

Children will enjoy a visit to Marwell Zoo, which will inspire learning across the curriculum and provide opportunities for observation, discussion and recount writing.

We look forward to a busy and exciting half-term filled with creativity, curiosity and learning!

🏃 Physical Education (PE)
PE lessons: Monday afternoons
Please ensure your child has their PE kit and trainers in school all week.

Golden Mile: Every Tuesday
This will continue as normal. Trainers should be kept in school please.

🌳 Forest School
Forest School will now take place on Wednesdays for Year 1 children only.

Please ensure children come to school dressed appropriately for outdoor learning, including suitable clothing for all weather conditions.

🏠 Homework

Reading
Please continue to read at home with your child as often as possible.

To encourage regular reading, children who read 5 times a week will have their name entered into a draw each month for a small reward. This can include school books or anything they enjoy reading at home.

Spelling

Spelling homework will:

  • Be sent home on Tuesdays

  • Be returned the following Monday

  • Begin from Week 2

A gentle reminder that homework should be returned each week. Completing and handing in homework helps to reinforce the learning taking place in school and gives children an opportunity to practise important skills independently.

Thank you for your continued support in helping your child complete and return their homework on time. It is greatly appreciated and makes a real difference to their progress.
