Phonics and early reading

We are passionate about teaching early reading at Woolhampton and put reading at the heart of everything that we do.  Our aim is to develop fluent, confident readers.  Our children start learning phonics as soon as they start with us.  We follow the 'Super Sonic Phonics Friends' Scheme throughout Early Years and KS1.

Phonics teaching is led by Mrs Auld.

Our early reading teaching is informed by the latest research and guidance (see DfE Early Reading Guidance below).  Daily phonics is taught throughout Early Years and KS1 and phonics intervention is taught where necessary in KS2.  Phonics is taught in a variety of fun and engaging ways which are designed to appeal to the learning styles of our younger learners.    Reading is key priority area throughout the whole school and key 'driver texts' are used to link curriculum teaching.  We are proud of our dedicated non-fiction library which contains an extensive range of books for use throughout the school.  Each class also has its own fiction library from which children can select their own books to take home read each night.
